Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary 18 times, between 11 February and 16 July 1858, at the grotto of Massabielle, near Lourdes.

The Lady asked Bernadette to become her messenger and to work, in her own way, for the conversion of fishermen.

She also asked her to create a place conducive to prayer and pilgrimage.

She presented herself to her using the dogma enunciated four years earlier by Pope Pius IX: ‘I am the Immaculate Conception’.

Bernadette became a modest servant who disappeared when the Church received the Virgin Mary's message.
